Summary of the first day: Races for kids and a blizzard from Sweden

The first day of skiing races at ČEZ Jizerská 50 is over. In the morning it was time for kids to set out on the trails. The noon saw the first race for the general public – Volkswagen Bedřichovská 30 freestyle. In the afternoon there was a sprint race with the presence of world’s top cross-country skiers. The programme culminated with a poetic memorial for the deceased mountaineers. If you still weren’t tired out you could go to Jablonec to see Tata Bojs in concert.

The whole programme started on Friday morning with children’s races around the stadium in Bedřichov. The race list of the Mini Jizerská Pojišťovny VZP was full, so 375 children set out on the course. Depending on their age category, they skied distances from 300 meters to 3 kilometres.

The programme continued with the 30k freestyle race. Slovak biathlon representative Tomáš Hasilla grabbed the trophy. Klára Moravcová defended her victory from the last edition of the race and triumphed here for the seventh time. Some 600 participants took part in the race.

The most interesting part of the programme to watch came at 4:30 pm when the stadium turned into a cross-country skiing parade of stars. BENZINA ORLEN Sprint was won by Swedish representatives Lina Korsgren and Max Novak. In their final runs they were the best against strong competition of 11 other skiers. The best Czech performance was Barbora Antošová’s fifth place.

Paradoxically maybe, the end of the day brought the official opening of the event. ČEZ Jizerská 50 is organised as a memorial to 15 deceased climbers who perished during a fateful ascent of Huascarán. As is already a tradition, wreaths were laid at their memorial site and two widows of the deceased spoke to the audience. Then there was the initiation ceremony for new members of the Masters Club, a society of matadors who have skied the Fifty at least thirty times.

Mírové náměstí Square in Jablonec nad Nisou then hosted ČEZ Energy Fest, with main stars in concert being Tata Bojs.
